Students at Rawson-Saunders have opporunities to explore and develop their athletic skills. In addition to the programs listed in this section, please see information on Tennis listed below in the Ater School Programs.
Rawson-Saunders participates in the Austin Private School Association (APSA) sports program. This program brings together students from a number of small private schools in the Austin area, providing a ridicule-free, safe, organized arena for being engaged in physical activities. Destination Imagination is an international program for students in grades kindergarten through college. Up to seven team members work together to solve their challenge. Team member must write a script, make all costumes, backdrops and props needed. They also learn to work together to solve mini-challenges in 3-5 minutes. They learn to budget time and money.
Because team members cannot be replaced after work has begun on the challenge, prospective team members may try the program for three weeks before committing to join.
Students learn the basics of teaching their dog to respond to common commands.
Introduction to Drama will develop students' knowledge and skills in acting and directing through their own experience and imagination, as well as through our research of literature and history. Students will learn basic acting skills, play theatrical games, learn related vocabulary terms, and perform short plays as a result of acquired skills. Introduction to Drama will promote self-expression, confidence and creativity.
The Journalism Club produces a monthly newsletter that reports on the happenings at Rawson-Saunders. Interested students will be given the opportunity to work on their writing skills in a more relaxed and fun setting. The club's enrollment is limited to those students in grades five and up.
Weekly piano lessons (aligned with the school calendar) are offered to the students at Rawson-Saunders! These piano lessons are taught using multi-sensory methods such as color-coding, ear training, kinesthetic concept exploration, and musical manipulative exercises. The instructional books used are published by Alfred's and will be paid or by the piano student, as needed.
In Robotics, students explore engineering, computer programming, and problem solving using the Lego Mindstorms system. No experience is necessary; all that is required is a curious and creative mind. In May, students participate in Mindstorms Mania, a celebration of Robotics programs in Central Texas schools. The Robotics program has been developed for students through a joint program sponsored by Lego, National Instruments, the College of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, and Tufts University.
Students will learn and practice tennis fundamentals. Class will be held at the O'Henry Middle School tennis courts.
This toy making class will incorporate materials that will ensure a high success rate, not to mention something really cool to bring home to brag about.
