Rawson-Saunders School emphasizes total language development within a full curriculum based on the TEKS. Primary emphasis is on students' mastery of language and study skills. The individualized instruction begins with an emphasis on phonological awareness, and takes a structured, sequential, multisensory, phonics-based approach to reading and written language mastery. A student's day includes 50 minute periods for Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science. In addition, all students meet with an Academic Language Therapist for 50 minutes each day. Students have Physical Education, Art, Music, and Woodworking classes twice a week. Homework for students in grades 2 through 5 is one hour a day, and one and a half hours a day for students in grades 6 through 8. | Elementary | To best serve the educational needs of our youngest students, they are flexibly grouped for instruction. All students receive language therapy daily in groups of one or two with an academic language therapist. | | 6th - 7th Grades | Middle School students change classes after each period, and usually receive language therapy in groups of two students. | | 8th Grade | In addition to core curriculum, transition skills are emphasized for graduating students, who receive intensive instruction in study and organizational skills as they prepare for high school. Most Rawson-Saunders graduates return to mainstream schools and are very successful. |
